My Commitment

I see a gap in pregnancy services that do not honour the diversity and unique needs of the many people who require support:

The unfortunate truth is that Black and Indigenous people in Canada experience poor treatment and negative pregnancy outcomes at vastly higher rates than white people in Canadian hospitals.

Queer and transgender people often do not see themselves represented in birth culture and/or find their healthcare providers incompetent to at providing them with adequate and knowledgeable reproductive care.

Folks with low-to-moderate income levels often cannot afford the services of private doulas, but do not qualify for subsidized support programs.

Those in circumstances involving abuse, past or current trauma, substance use, or whose pregnancies are unwanted or invoke mixed feelings, may feel alienated by birth services that seem to assume and cater to a specific kind of "happy family" pregnancy narrative.

Pregnant folks who seek abortion also find their experiences siloed and separate from the culture of pregnancy and birth at large, despite the fact that one in five pregnancies ends in miscarriage or abortion. This creates stigma and alienation around a common experience that should be treated with compassion.

I am committed changing the culture of birth and reproductive healthcare in our community from one that serves and honours only a select "ideal" vision of pregnancy to one that includes and empowers every experience and outcome of pregnancy.

I am continuously engaging in activism and professional development that keeps me at the forefront of current debates, issues, and specialties so that I can be an informed advocate for all my clients.

I place you, the client, at the heart of our relationship. My role revolves around listening to how YOU identify your needs and expectations. I will be your fiercest advocate and your staunchest, non-judgmental supporter.

I work on a sliding scale payment model to ensure that financial need does not prevent you from receiving competent and dignified care.

I belong to a like-minded community of birthworkers in Ottawa that share my values for accessible and inclusive care. If I do not have the capacity to give you the support you need, the chances are I can find someone who can! Please reach out if you need help finding a support person.

My Philosophy

Pregnancy and childbirth are transformative in all kinds of ways. How we experience pregnancy and childbirth depends on our circumstances, but also on the beliefs and experiences that have led us here. Each pregnancy is as unique as the person carrying it.

Pregnancy and childbirth do not need to be frightening, traumatizing, or cause suffering. With a strong support network and preparation, you can feel empowered and at peace regarding your pregnancy, no matter the outcome.

I honour the experiences that led you to this place in your life, and I believe that only you know what’s best for yourself and for your family. I lend you my skills and knowledge to make your pregnancy, childbirth, or termination as affirming and positive as possible!
